The vast majority of people who are using a BETHEL saddle are those who make their living on horseback.

The 'Wade' saddle is the most popular Western saddle made at Bethel Saddlery. For several years now the traditional Wade has been one of the first choices of horsemen & horsewomen throughout Australia. Suitable for stock work, colt starting and just general riding, every slick fork Wade is built using the famous Warren Wright rawhide covered saddle trees.

The 'Western Stock' saddle  is perhaps the most innovative and evolutionary saddle in Australia today. This saddle is a hybrid of the tradtional Australian Stock Saddle and the American Western saddle. Some people refer to this hard working or Campdraft saddle as a fender stock saddle. Only the very best rawhide covered saddle trees are used in these Western Stock saddles.

Our Committment

I have been building saddles since 1998 and in that time I have had the privilege to have made saddles and sold gear to people in every part of Australia and several foreign countries.

It has also been an honour to have met and worked with some of the best western saddle makers who have ever lived. These men have devoted their life to this wonderful craft and I would like to think that I am playing some part in keeping this skill alive here in Australia; we never take for granted the faith that our many loyal customer have placed in us over the last 30 years.

We are dedicated to producing and selling the best saddles, saddlery tack and associated products that we can and our commitment to you is that we will stand behind each and every product that we sell - we give you our word on that.

If we can ever be of assistance with any of your saddle, saddlery & tack requirements we would love to hear from you....Michael Bethel, Leahton Park, Charters Towers, Queensland.

The Bethel Saddlery Story

Michael and Lynda BethelMichael Bethel grew up on Mount Turner, a cattle Station in North Queensland's gulf country about 20 miles downstream from Georgetown, the historical gold mining town on the Etheridge River. The property was originally bought by his grandfather and is now owned and still being run by Michael's parents. It was in this environment that he developed a love for leatherwork and could always be found tinkering with leather and making gear.

At the end of his schooling he returned to help on the family cattle property and continued making and selling leatherwork in his spare time. Following the marriage to his wife Lynda and the fact that there was now a growing demand for his saddlery and gear he thought he should take it one step further and build a saddle. In 1988 after buying a book on the subject, this self-taught saddler finally built a saddle. It was not to his liking so he thought he should build another, and to borrow an old cliché the rest is history. BETHEL SADDLERY was now in existence.

In 1991 he loaded up his family which now included the first of two children (Stacey & Caitlin), bought a small farm adjacent to the Atherton Tablelands and continued building saddles and with the help and support of Lynda, started breeding Texas Longhorn cattle.

The biggest turning point in this saddle maker’s life was meeting Dale Harwood, regarded by many as the most accomplished western saddle maker there is, who was in Australia conducting a saddle tree building school. Dale offered to help Michael with his saddles if he ever had a chance to visit the USA. So in 1994 he headed to the US for a couple of months where he had the good fortune of being shown some of the finer techniques of Western saddle making.

In 1998, the family sold out and bought an 1100 acre property, Leahton Park just North of Charters Towers right in the heart of North Queensland's cattle country. It is here that they are now based, operating BETHEL SADDLERY where fine Custom Saddles are being made. HORSESHOE B LONGHORNS is their registered Texas Longhorn stud which they run along with commercial Brahman steers.

In 2009 they started TEXAS LONGHORN WAGON TOURS & SAFARIS which is now a multi award winning tourist attraction.

Michael Bethel has built more than 600 saddles including saddles for Big Bend Saddlery, Texas and Harwood Saddlery, Idaho and has exhibited his saddles at the Trappings of Texas, Alpine, Texas and also the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko Nevada.
